The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine is designed to reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 15-30 per cent, without a major change in vehicle or engine architecture – thus reducing running costs as well as overall manufacturing costs. 

The simple explanation is that HCCI can provide the best of both worlds – the fuel-efficiency of diesel with the “cleaner” combustion of gasoline engines – without the need for spark plugs, after-treatment systems to filter emissions or three-way catalytic converters.
